For New England Patriots' Bill Belichick, only 'Way' is winning

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick insisted on Thursday that his focus steadfastly remains on winning, as opposed to how others perceive the so-called "Patriot Way."

Belichick was rather blunt when asked whether it's important for players to feel like they're enjoying themselves while putting in the work that is being asked of them.

"We feel what's important to us is to win," the 66-year-old Belichick said. "So that's really what we're trying to do."

The next inquiry centered around Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle Lane Johnson, who previously claimed that the "The Patriot Way is a fear-based organization."

As expected, Belichick played it close to the vest.

"Yeah, we're focused on what we're doing, trying to get better and taking each day we can to try to improve our football team," Belichick said. "Not really focused on what everybody else is doing."

While Belichick may not be focused on what everybody else is doing, others have been quick to criticize the Patriots' methods.

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Cassius Marsh said recently he became so disillusioned with the "Patriot Way" during his brief stint in New England that he considered walking away from the game.

"They don't have fun there. There's nothing fun about it," Marsh told the San Francisco Chronicle. "There's nothing happy about it. I didn't enjoy any of my time there, you know what I'm saying? It made me for the first time in my life think about not playing football because I hated it that much."

Marsh, who was claimed on waivers by the 49ers in November following his release by the Patriots, admitted that he "wanted to get waived" because of how he was being utilized by New England.

Eagles guard Brandon Brooks also recently spoke out against the so-called "Patriot Way."

Brooks never played for Belichick, but he did spend four seasons with protege Bill O'Brien with the Houston Texans before joining the Eagles prior to the 2016 season.

"It's crazy that people haven't known this," the 28-year-old Pro Bowl selection said, via Bleeding Green Nation. "It's been this way for like a decade. You've seen -- Reggie Wayne did it. He retired. He went there [to the Patriots] for a training camp and retired. [Expletive] is not fun there.

"I was under the same regime in Houston [with O'Brien]. I almost retired. [Expletive] was miserable, every day. Every day."

O'Brien was an offensive assistant with the Patriots from 2007-2011 and became the Texans' head coach in 2014.

"I came in [as a rookie] under [Gary] Kubiak, who was just an older version of Doug [Pederson]," Brooks said. "Then I went to O'Brien, who was Belichick, and then I came back to Doug, who's like Kubes, so for me, man, [expletive] was great. Like, I cannot tell you how much better this is than it was down there. Like, it's just night and day."
